Introducing The Upstander Effect: Turning Bystanders into Upstanders
Have you ever witnessed an act of gender-based violence? It’s a moment that can leave you feeling frozen in time and unsure what to do. For many people, the instinct is to freeze, hope that someone else will intervene, or avoid involvement entirely. This hesitation isn’t unusual—it’s what psychology calls the bystander effect.
Studies show that 60–70% of people stay silent in critical moments, leaving survivors without the support they desperately need. But what if it didn’t have to be this way? What if more of us knew exactly how to act, and act safely?
We’re passionate about creating a world where silence is replaced by action, and inaction gives way to meaningful intervention. That’s why we’re excited to introduce The Upstander Effect, a first-of-its-kind narrative simulation game designed to teach you the basics of bystander intervention.
What is The Upstander Effect?
The Upstander Effect is more than a game—it’s an immersive learning experience. It places you in scenarios where you witness gender-based violence and challenges you to decide what to do next. Each choice offers valuable insights into how to respond safely and effectively in real-life situations.
Designed to be interactive and thought-provoking, the game empowers players with the tools to navigate these moments with confidence. You’ll learn strategies to intervene without compromising your own safety, showing that even small actions can make a big difference.
Why does this matter?
Too often, people assume intervention means confrontation or putting themselves at risk. The truth? Effective action can be as simple as a distraction, enlisting help, or offering quiet support. The Upstander Effect helps you recognize these options, removing the fear of “doing it wrong.”
By fostering a culture of Upstanders—people who choose action over inaction—we can build safer communities where survivors know they are not alone.
Play the Game, Be the Change.
The Upstander Effect is your chance to step up. Whether you’re already passionate about social justice or just beginning to explore how you can make a difference, this game offers a safe space to learn and grow.
